There was a little spider who lived in a big mango tree. One sunny morning, the spider looked down and saw a patch full of sweet pumpkins. A monkey had been taking care of these pumpkins all season and was very proud of them. The spider was tired of eating mangoes and really wanted to taste a pumpkin, but he knew the monkey wouldn’t be happy about that.
When the monkey’s tummy started to rumble, he decided it was time for a snack and a nap. He went into his cabin, leaving the pumpkin patch alone. This was the spider’s chance! He quickly crawled down the tree and into the pumpkin patch. He found the juiciest pumpkin with a soft spot and started to nibble his way inside.
The spider chewed and chewed until he was inside the pumpkin. He ate so much that he felt sleepy and took a nap. Suddenly, he woke up to the sound of the monkey whistling as he returned to his garden. The spider knew he had to get out before the monkey found him. But oh no! He had eaten so much that he was stuck inside the pumpkin!
The spider thought quickly and called out, “Oh no, what am I going to do now?” The monkey heard a voice and stopped whistling. “Who said that?” he asked. The spider, pretending to be the pumpkin, said, “It’s me, Polly the pumpkin. I’m tired today and can’t deal with the noise. Can you please keep it down?”
The monkey was amazed. “Wait, you have a name and you can talk?” he asked. The spider replied, “Of course I have a name and yes, I can talk! Pumpkins get stuck all the time, but no one ever stops to listen.”
The monkey was so excited that he decided to take the pumpkin to the market to show everyone. He arrived just in time to catch some shoppers and vendors. Standing on a crate, he shouted, “Everybody come listen to my talking pumpkin!”
Everyone was surprised and gathered around. But the spider inside the pumpkin just giggled and didn’t say a word. The monkey started to feel frustrated.
Feeling a bit sorry for tricking the monkey, the spider finally spoke up. “Do not be afraid. This is Spider. I’m inside the pumpkin, and pumpkins cannot talk. I’m sorry for tricking you; it was all a joke—April Fools!”
The monkey went from being upset to laughing a lot. “You pesky pumpkin! You pesky spider! You really had me fooled! Here I was thinking that pumpkins can really talk!”
The spider said, “I was hungry and I ate a pumpkin, but if you will let me, I would like to help you in your garden.” The monkey and spider laughed together and went back to the monkey’s cabin to finish their work for the day. From then on, whenever the monkey worked in his garden, he would chuckle and think about the pesky pumpkin.

Once upon a time, there was a spider and a pesky pumpkin. One bright morning, a spider sat high up in a mango tree and looked down at the sweet pumpkins in the monkey’s patch. The monkey had been busy all season tending to his patch and was proud of his work. The spider wanted nothing more than to have a big bite of the juicy pumpkins because he was tired of eating mangoes, but he knew the monkey would not allow it.
When his belly started to rumble, the monkey knew it was time to take a break. He went into his cabin for a midday treat and a nap. This was the moment the spider had been waiting for! He crawled down the mango tree and into the pumpkin patch, where he found the juiciest pumpkin with a soft spot. He started to chew his way in.
The spider chewed his way into the middle of the pumpkin and ate to his heart’s content. He was so relaxed that he even fell asleep. The spider awoke to the sound of the monkey whistling, who was back at work tending to his garden. The spider knew he had to get out of the pumpkin before the monkey could find him. He tried to escape through the hole he had chewed before, but he had eaten so much that he found himself stuck.
“Oh no, what am I going to do now?” the spider called out. “Hey, can you please stop all the noise?” The monkey stopped whistling and asked who said that. From inside the pumpkin, the spider replied, “It’s me, Polly the pumpkin. I’m tired today and can’t deal with the noise. Can you please keep it down?”
The monkey picked up the pumpkin with the spider inside and said, “Wait, you have a name and you can talk?” The spider replied, “Of course I have a name and yes, I can talk! Pumpkins get stuck all the time, but no one ever stops to listen.”
Immediately, the monkey thought, “I need to take this to the market to tell everyone in Town Square about my special talking pumpkin!” After the market, the monkey arrived just in time to catch a few shoppers and vendors. He was excited to share what he found. He stood on an empty crate and called everyone over, saying, “Everybody come listen to my talking pumpkin!”
Everyone was surprised and asked, “You have a talking pumpkin?” The monkey replied, “Yes, listen to the pumpkin!” But the spider didn’t say anything; he was just giggling inside the pumpkin.
As the monkey grew frustrated, the spider felt bad about tricking him. By this point, the spider was small enough to come out of the pumpkin. From inside, he said to the monkey, “Do not be afraid. This is Spider. I’m inside the pumpkin, and pumpkins cannot talk. I’m sorry for tricking you; it was all a joke—April Fools!”
The monkey went from feeling very upset to laughing uncontrollably as he watched the spider climb out of the pumpkin. “You pesky pumpkin! You pesky spider! You really had me fooled! Here I was thinking that pumpkins can really talk!”
The spider said, “I was hungry and I ate a pumpkin, but if you will let me, I would like to help you in your garden.” The monkey and spider laughed some more, and together they walked back to the monkey’s cabin to finish up the work for the day. From then on, the monkey would always chuckle and think about the pesky pumpkin when he worked in his garden.
