Scratch Video Update: Episode 24

Hi everyone! I’m Shannon Pica, also known as Champ 99 on Scratch, and I’m Eric, also known as Visually on Scratch. Welcome to our Scratch video update! This time, we’re talking about something super fun: Scratch Day!

What is Scratch Day?

Scratch Day is a big celebration for everyone who loves using Scratch. It’s like a party that happens all around the world! People come together to share their Scratch projects and have fun. There are about a thousand events where people meet up to celebrate and create cool things. Even if you can’t go to an event, you can still join the fun online!

Awesome Scratch Day Projects

In the “Loved” section, we want to tell you about some amazing Scratch projects we found. One of them is a game called “Trash Day Platformer” by Ferial Two to Eight. In this game, you try to get to your Scratch Day event while jumping over obstacles. There are twenty levels to play through, and it’s super fun!

Eric also found a project called “Scratch Day Remix Chain.” It’s a project from last year, but it’s still really cool. In this project, people pass a balloon to each other, and there are about fifty people who joined in! It’s a great way to celebrate Scratch Day together.

Fun Activities in the Scratch Community

There are lots of fun things happening in the Scratch online community. Since it’s Scratch Day, many people made special Scratch birthday cards. It’s always nice to get a card, and we loved seeing all the creative designs!

If you want to make your own card, there’s a tutorial on the Scratch website that shows you how. You can make cards for birthdays or any celebration. People really enjoy getting Scratch cards!

A Special Message

Usually, we have a message from the Scratch team, but this time, we have a thank you from everyone who went to the Scratch Day event at MIT. They want to say a big thank you for celebrating with us!

And guess what? We have a giant balloon, and we’re going to pop it! We’ll see you next month for another video update. Happy Scratch Day!

  • What do you think would be the most fun part of celebrating Scratch Day? Have you ever been to a celebration or event that was similar?
  • If you could create your own Scratch project for Scratch Day, what kind of game or story would you make? Why do you think others would enjoy it?
  • Have you ever made a card for someone special? How did it make you feel to give or receive a card? What kind of card would you like to make using Scratch?
  • Create Your Own Scratch Day Project: Think about something you love or a fun game you enjoy. Use Scratch to create a simple project or game that you can share with your friends or family. Try to include at least one character and a background. Once you’re done, show it to someone and explain how you made it!

  • Scratch Day Observation Journal: For one week, keep a journal of all the Scratch projects you explore. Write down the name of each project, what you liked about it, and any ideas it gave you for your own projects. At the end of the week, share your favorite project with the class and explain why you liked it.

  • Design a Scratch Day Card: Use paper, crayons, and markers to design a Scratch Day card for a friend or family member. Think about what makes Scratch Day special and include those elements in your card. Once you’ve designed it on paper, try to recreate it using Scratch and send it to someone special!

Hi everybody, I’m Shannon Pica, also known as Champ 99 on Scratch, and I’m Eric, also known as Visually on Scratch. Welcome to the Scratch video update! The theme of this month’s episode is Scratch Day.

So, what is Scratch Day? That’s a good question! I would describe Scratch Day as a global celebration of Scratch and the people who use it. The way it’s celebrated is through events that happen all over the world. I think there are about a thousand events that have taken place and will continue to happen, where people come together to celebrate and create. It’s also celebrated in the online community, which is what we’re going to highlight.

In the “Loved” section, we want to share some Scratch Day projects that we loved in the online community. There’s a really awesome platformer called “Trash Day Platformer” by Ferial Two to Eight. In this game, you try to reach your Scratch Day event while overcoming various obstacles. I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s worth playing through the twenty different levels. I’m not the best at platformer games, so give it a try!

What about you, Eric?

There’s a project called “Scratch Day Remix Chain.” It’s actually a project from last year, but we still want to highlight it because it’s fantastic. It celebrates Scratch Day in a collaborative way, where each person takes a balloon and passes it on. We just passed it between two people, but there are like fifty participants. It’s a really cool remix chain!

Speaking of things to check out, let’s talk about fun activities happening in the online community. Since this is Scratch Day themed, I want to mention some great Scratch birthday cards that were created to celebrate Scratch Day. It’s always wonderful to receive cards, and I appreciate everyone who sent those.

I think a fun activity to try is our tutorial on making your own cards, which is available on the Scratch website. It walks you through how to create a card, and I encourage you to make one for upcoming birthdays or celebrations. People love receiving Scratch cards!

Now, we usually have a message from the Scratch team, but this time we have a message from everyone who attended the Scratch Day event at MIT. Their message is a loud thank you for hanging out with us!

We have a giant balloon, and we’re going to pop it! We’ll see you in a month for the next video update. Happy Scratch Day!
