  • Have you ever used a map or seen someone use a map? Where were you going, and how did the map help you find your way?
  • Can you think of a time when you needed to know which direction to go, like North or South? What did you do to figure it out?
  • If you could create a map of your neighborhood or school, what important places would you include, and which directions would you use to help someone find them?
  1. Compass Craft: Create your own compass using a paper plate, a marker, and a paperclip. Draw the cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) on the plate. Then, add the ordinal directions (Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest) in between. Use a paperclip as the needle. Spin it and see which direction it points to. Try using your compass to find directions in your home or classroom!

  2. Direction Hunt: Go on a direction hunt around your house or school. Start at a specific location and give directions using cardinal and ordinal directions to find a hidden object or treasure. For example, “Take 5 steps North, then 3 steps East.” See if you can create a map of your journey!

  3. Story Time Adventure: Imagine you are a character in a story who needs to find a hidden treasure. Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your adventure. Use cardinal and ordinal directions to describe how you find your way to the treasure. Share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can follow your directions!
