Compass Craft: Create your own compass using a paper plate, a marker, and a paperclip. Draw the cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) on the plate. Then, add the ordinal directions (Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest) in between. Use a paperclip as the needle. Spin it and see which direction it points to. Try using your compass to find directions in your home or classroom!
Direction Hunt: Go on a direction hunt around your house or school. Start at a specific location and give directions using cardinal and ordinal directions to find a hidden object or treasure. For example, “Take 5 steps North, then 3 steps East.” See if you can create a map of your journey!
Story Time Adventure: Imagine you are a character in a story who needs to find a hidden treasure. Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your adventure. Before we get started, let’s get acquainted with the four cardinal directions. Here’s our compass rose: this is North, this is South, this is East, and this is West. There are a few more directions, known as the ordinal or intermediate directions, that lie halfway between the cardinal directions. Between North and East, we have Northeast; between South and East, we have Southeast; between North and West, we have Northwest; and between South and West, we have Southwest.
Now that we are familiar with the eight directions, let’s dive right in!

In which direction should Mike go if he wants to buy some books? Mike should walk toward the East to buy books. If Mike wants to grab a quick bite, in which direction should he head? Mike should head toward the Southeast.
