Introduction

Jordan, officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is an Arab country located in Western Asia. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and east, Iraq to the north-east, Syria to the north, and Israel and Palestine to the west. The capital and largest city is Amman.

Geography

Jordan is characterized by diverse terrain and landscapes, ranging from the fertile Jordan Valley to the mountainous regions, the eastern desert, and the spectacular Dead Sea. The country has a total area of approximately 89,342 square kilometers. Despite its relatively small size, Jordan’s topography varies widely.

Population

As of 2021, Jordan has a population of approximately 10 million people. The country has a young population, with over half under the age of 30. Jordanians are predominantly Arab, but the country is also home to a significant number of refugees from neighboring countries, particularly Palestine, Iraq, and Syria.

Language

The official language of Jordan is Arabic. English is widely spoken, especially in the cities and among the younger generations. It is also taught in schools as a compulsory second language.

Economy

Jordan’s economy is relatively well diversified. Trade and finance, communication, public utilities, and construction are important sectors of the economy. Tourism also plays a significant role, with numerous ancient and historical sites, including the famous Petra. However, the country faces economic challenges, including high unemployment and large numbers of refugees.

Education

Education in Jordan is compulsory for students from the age of 6 to 16. The country has a high literacy rate, with 98% of the population being literate. Jordan is known for its advanced education system, with numerous universities and higher education institutions offering a wide range of programs.

Culture

Jordanian culture is a blend of traditional Arab customs and Western influences. The country is known for its hospitality and the importance it places on family and community. Jordanian cuisine is diverse and flavorful, with dishes like mansaf, falafel, and hummus being popular. The country also has a vibrant arts scene, with music, film, and visual arts being important cultural expressions.
