In the lesson “Introducing CodeBytes,” Hadi Partovi and his daughter Sofia invite students to participate in a week of live, interactive coding lessons during Computer Science Education Week. Participants will engage in fun projects such as creating a Dance Party, building an outbreak simulator, solving puzzles in Minecraft, designing apps, and exploring artificial intelligence by training computers to recognize sign language images. The program aims to make coding accessible and enjoyable for everyone, encouraging creativity and learning in a supportive environment.

Introducing CodeBytes!

Hi there! I’m Hadi Partovi, and I started Code.org and the Hour of Code. This is my daughter, Sofia. Hello, everyone! This year, we’re doing something really exciting for Computer Science Education Week. Since many schools are closed, and teachers might need some help with the Hour of Code, we’re here to lend a hand. My team and I will be hosting five days of live, interactive lessons where you can join us and learn how to code!

What Will We Do?

During these lessons, you’ll get to create your own Dance Party with music from popular artists. Imagine coding your own dance moves and seeing them come to life! We’ll also show you how to make an outbreak simulator, which helps you understand how a virus spreads. It’s like being a scientist and a coder at the same time!

Exploring Minecraft and More

We’ll dive into the world of Minecraft, where you’ll solve cool puzzles and challenges. Minecraft is not just a game; it’s a place where you can learn and have fun with coding. Plus, we’ll talk about how computer science can make a difference in the world. You’ll learn the basics of designing apps and even create your own app that can help others.

Learning About AI

Finally, we’ll explore how to train a computer to recognize sign language images in real time. This is a part of artificial intelligence, or AI, which is like teaching computers to think and learn. It’s amazing what you can do with coding!

Join Us!

No matter where you are, computer science is something you can do. It’s fun, easy, and a fantastic way to show your creativity. Join us from December 7th to 11th for a week of learning and fun. We can’t wait to see you there!

  1. What aspects of the CodeBytes initiative do you find most exciting, and why?
  2. How do you think creating a Dance Party with code can enhance your understanding of programming concepts?
  3. In what ways do you believe learning to code through Minecraft can be both educational and entertaining?
  4. Reflect on the potential impact of designing an app that helps others. What kind of app would you like to create, and why?
  5. How does the idea of coding an outbreak simulator help you understand real-world problems better?
  6. What are your thoughts on the role of artificial intelligence in recognizing sign language images, and how might this technology be used in the future?
  7. How do you think participating in live, interactive coding lessons could benefit your learning experience compared to traditional methods?
  8. What personal goals do you have for participating in Computer Science Education Week, and how do you plan to achieve them?
  1. Create Your Own Dance Party

Join us in creating a Dance Party by coding your own dance moves. Use block-based coding to select music and choreograph dance sequences. Experiment with different moves and see how they come to life on the screen. Share your dance party with classmates and discuss what coding techniques you used.

  2. Build an Outbreak Simulator

Become a scientist and coder by building an outbreak simulator. Use coding to model how a virus spreads in a community. Adjust variables like infection rate and recovery time to see how they affect the spread. Discuss with your classmates how coding can help in understanding real-world problems.

  3. Solve Minecraft Puzzles

Dive into Minecraft and solve coding puzzles and challenges. Use logic and problem-solving skills to navigate through different levels. Work in pairs to brainstorm solutions and share your strategies with the class. Reflect on how coding in Minecraft can be both educational and fun.

  4. Design Your Own App

Learn the basics of app design and create your own app that can help others. Think about a problem you want to solve and use coding to design an app that addresses it. Present your app idea to the class and explain how it can make a difference in the world.

  5. Explore AI with Sign Language Recognition

Explore the world of artificial intelligence by training a computer to recognize sign language images. Use coding to teach the computer how to identify different signs. Discuss how AI can be used in real-world applications and the importance of technology in communication.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi, I’m Hadi Partovi, founder of Code.org and the Hour of Code. This is my daughter, Sofia. Hi everyone! This year, Code.org is doing something special for Computer Science Education Week. Since many schools are closed and teachers may need support to host an Hour of Code, we’re here to help. My team and I will host five days of live interactive short lessons, where students can join in and learn to code with us.

You’ll have the opportunity to program your own Dance Party, featuring music from popular artists. We’ll guide you in creating your own outbreak simulator to visualize how a virus spreads. Then, we’ll explore the world of Minecraft and tackle unique puzzles. Because computer science has the potential to positively impact the world, we’ll cover the basics of app design and how to create your own app for good. Finally, we’ll look at how to train a computer AI to recognize sign language images in real time.

No matter where you are or who you are, computer science can come to you. It’s fun, easy, and a great way to express your creativity. Join us for learning together every day from December 7th through 11th. See you soon!

Let me know if you need any further modifications!
