Humans have what’s called a “bandwidth problem” when it comes to communication. We receive tons of information through our senses, which is a lot to handle all at once. This is known as high-bandwidth communication. The information coming in is like a waterfall, while the information going out is just a tiny drop. Our brains can do so much more.
Creating a direct connection between our brains and machines could unlock this potential. This idea is part of a field known as brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs can be used for rehabilitation, assessment, and even enhancing our abilities. Examples include thought-controlled wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and communication tools for people with conditions like ALS.
