Introduction

Greenland, the world’s largest island that is not a continent, is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. It is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The majority of its land area is covered by an ice sheet. Greenland’s population is small, with most people living along the southwestern coast.

Geography

Greenland is characterized by its vast tundra, towering mountains, and massive glaciers. The island is approximately 2,166,086 square kilometers in size, 80% of which is covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet. The coastline is rugged and rocky, with deep fjords cutting into the land. The climate varies from Arctic to subarctic, with cool summers and cold winters.

Population and Culture

Greenland has a population of about 56,000 people, the majority of whom are Inuit or mixed Inuit and Danish descent. The official language is Greenlandic (Kalaallisut), but Danish and English are also widely spoken. The culture of Greenland has been influenced by Inuit traditions, with a strong emphasis on family, hunting, and storytelling.

Economy

Greenland’s economy is heavily dependent on fishing and fish exports, which make up the majority of the island’s exports. Other significant sectors include mining, tourism, and the public sector. Greenland receives substantial annual subsidies from the Danish government, which make up about half of the government budget.

Government

Greenland is a parliamentary democracy and part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has a high degree of self-government, with its own parliament and government responsible for most domestic affairs. The head of state is the Danish monarch, represented in Greenland by a high commissioner.

Education

Education in Greenland is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 16. The education system is divided into primary and lower secondary levels, upper secondary education, and higher education. The University of Greenland, located in Nuuk, is the only university on the island.
