First Day at the Hairdresser – Learning with Alex

Welcome to the Hair Salon!

Today, we’re going on a fun adventure with Alex. He is visiting the hair salon because his hair has grown really long. It’s also his birthday, and he wants to look super cool!

Meeting Mr. Curl

When Alex arrives at the salon, Mr. Curl, the hairdresser, greets him with a big smile. “Come in and take a seat, Alex!” says Mr. Curl. “Your hair has grown so much! Let’s make it look nice by cutting a little in the back and trimming your bangs.”

Getting a Haircut

Alex agrees and says, “Okay, Mr. Curl, that sounds like a good idea. You can start cutting whenever you want.” Mr. Curl uses scissors, a comb, and a brush to carefully cut Alex’s hair. He even uses a hair dryer to make it look just right!

Looking Great!

After a few minutes, Mr. Curl is all done. “Do you like it?” he asks. Alex looks in the mirror and smiles. “Yeah, it’s great! My family was right; now I look much more elegant,” he says happily.

What Happens at the Hair Salon?

When you visit a hair salon, the hairdresser helps you by cutting or styling your hair. They use special tools like scissors, combs, brushes, and a hair dryer to make sure you look your best.

Time to Pay

Alex thanks Mr. Curl and gives him six coins for the haircut. It’s important to say thank you when someone helps you!

  • Have you ever been to a hair salon or had a haircut at home? What was your experience like, and how did you feel afterward?
  • What tools do you think are important for a hairdresser to have, and why do you think they use them?
  • Why do you think it’s important to say thank you after someone helps you, like Alex did with Mr. Curl?
  1. Role-Play Hair Salon: Set up a pretend hair salon in the classroom or at home. Use toy scissors, combs, and brushes. Take turns being the hairdresser and the customer. Ask questions like, “How would you like your hair styled today?” and “What tools do we need to use?” This activity helps children understand the roles and tools used in a hair salon.

  2. Tool Matching Game: Create a matching game with pictures of hair salon tools and their names. Have the children match each tool with its correct name. Discuss what each tool is used for, like “What do we use scissors for?” or “How does a hair dryer help?” This will help reinforce their understanding of the tools used in a hair salon.

  3. Observation Walk: Take a walk around the neighborhood or look at pictures of different hairstyles. Ask the children to observe and describe the hairstyles they see. Encourage them to think about how a hairdresser might have styled each one. Questions like “What do you think the hairdresser did to create this style?” can help them apply what they’ve learned about haircuts and styling.
