???? Kids Book Read Aloud: IT’S NOT EASY BEING SANTA

Welcome, Little Readers!

Hello, my fun-loving reading friends! I’m Ani, and I’m so happy you’re here to read with me today. Are you ready for a fun story? Let’s meet a cute little bug who makes a special wish. Let’s find out what happens when it comes true as we read “It’s Not Easy Being Santa.” If you have the book, you can read along with me!

The Story Begins

Once upon a time, there was a little bug who loved Christmas. He loved presents, Christmas trees, and most of all, Christmas cookies! One snowy Christmas Eve, Bug was playing outside when he saw a mail truck zoom by. Oh no! The letters to Santa were flying out of the mailbag!

Bug’s Big Adventure

Bug quickly collected the wet letters from the snow. He took them to his room to dry. Bug read the letters from kids he knew: Liam wanted a surfboard, Emily wanted a robot, Sophia wanted a puppy, and many more. The last letter was from Nikki, the girl next door. She wrote, “Dear Santa, I feel lonely. Can you please send me a friend?”

A Magical Wish

Bug felt sad for Nikki and worried the letters wouldn’t reach Santa in time. He looked out the window at the twinkling stars and made a wish on a shooting star: “I wish I were Santa!” Suddenly, Bug had a big beard, a red suit, and Santa’s sleigh with reindeer appeared at his window!

Delivering Joy

Bug hopped into the sleigh with the letters. The reindeer flew up, up, up into the sky! Bug picked presents from a big sack, each with a name on it. He delivered a puppy to Sophia, and he ate the cookies and milk left for Santa. Bug visited Olivia’s house, Carter’s house, and Noah’s house, delivering presents and enjoying cookies.

Learning a Lesson

By morning, Bug was tired. “It’s not easy being Santa!” he said. When he woke up, he found a present with his name on it. Inside was a tiny Santa who winked at him. Bug remembered Nikki’s letter. She wanted a friend. He ran to Nikki’s house and said, “Hey Nikki, I have some Christmas cookies for you! Would you like to play with me?”

The Best Gift of All

Bug learned that the most important thing at Christmas is making sure everyone has a friend and feels loved. That’s the best gift of all!

Goodbye for Now!

Hello, my good friends all over the world! I’m so happy we can read together, no matter where we live. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!

  • What do you think it would be like to be Santa for a night? What would you enjoy the most, and what might be difficult?
  • Bug wanted to help Nikki feel less lonely by being her friend. Can you think of a time when you helped someone feel better? How did it make you feel?
  • Bug learned that the best gift is making sure everyone feels loved and has a friend. What are some ways you can show kindness to your friends and family during the holidays?
  1. Santa’s Helper Craft: Let’s make our own Santa hats! Use red construction paper to cut out a triangle for the hat and a strip for the brim. Glue cotton balls along the brim and at the tip of the triangle to make it fluffy. Wear your hat and pretend to be Santa’s helper, just like Bug! Think about how you can help others and make them feel special, just like Bug did for Nikki.

  2. Letter to a Friend: Just like the letters Bug found, let’s write a letter to a friend or family member. Think about what makes them special and what you appreciate about them. You can draw a picture or write a few words. Deliver your letter to them and see how it makes them smile. Discuss how it feels to give and receive kind words.

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a walk with a grown-up and look for things that remind you of Christmas or the holiday season. It could be decorations, lights, or even the smell of cookies! Talk about how these things make you feel and why they are special. Think about how you can bring joy to others, just like Bug did, by sharing these experiences.

“It’s Not Easy Being Santa,” written by Praguettomar, story layout by Ramona McLean, color artist McKella Fior.

Bug loves Christmas, bug loves presents, and Christmas trees, but most of all, he loves Christmas cookies. Just one bug on Christmas Eve, bug was playing in the snow when a mail truck flew by. Oh no, reading friends! Do you see what’s happening to all of the letters? They’re flying out of the mailbag!

Hey, wait! Bug collected the wet letters in the snow. He noticed the letters were written to Santa. Bug took the letters to his room to dry them. Most were from the kids he knew: Liam wants a surfboard, Emily wants a robot, Sophia wants a puppy, Carter wants a piano, Olivia wants a yo-yo, Jacob wants a board game, Noah wants a dump truck. The last letter was from Nikki, the girl next door.

“Dear Santa, I feel lonely. Can you please send me a friend?”

Bug felt sad for Nikki. He worried about the letters not reaching Santa in time. Bug looked through his window; the snow fell gently to the ground, and the sky twinkled with stars. Suddenly, he saw a shooting star and made a wish: “I wish I were Santa!”

When he opened his eyes, he had grown a beard, his body puffed up, and he was wearing a familiar red suit. Santa’s sleigh, pulled by six reindeer, stopped at the window. Bug stood frozen. One reindeer peeked inside the window.

“Come on, Santa! Don’t make us wait! We only have one night to deliver all the presents!”

Bug jumped into the sleigh with his box of letters. The sleigh jerked and sped up, up, up!

“Are you going to pick a present to deliver?”

He rummaged through a huge sack of presents. Each box had a name on it. He picked up a present addressed to his friend Sophia; she wanted a puppy this Christmas. Bug jumped through the chimney and placed the box near the Christmas tree. Bug gobbled up the cookies and milk that Sophia had left for Santa.

Oh no, it was midnight! Bug had a lot to do, so he climbed through the chimney and headed to Olivia’s house, then Carter’s house, and Noah’s house. Bug enjoyed the cookies. Bug spent the whole night delivering presents. It was almost morning. He yawned and rubbed his eyes.

“It’s not easy being Santa!”

When he woke up, he was tucked inside his blanket. He ran downstairs and found a present with his name on it. Inside was a miniature Santa smiling and winking at him.

“You still have one last gift to give.”

Bug remembered the letter from Nikki; she wanted a friend. He ran to Nikki’s house and rang the bell.

“Hey Nikki, I have some Christmas cookies for you! Would you like to play with me?”

Bug learned that the most important thing at Christmas time is to make sure everyone has a friend and feels loved.

Alright, let’s do some shout-outs today!
